Back To School Posture Problems

School is back and sessions….. and we all know what that means. LOTS OF SITTING! Whether you are going into school or attending online, we are all going to feel the same struggles. We are sitting too long and struggling to stay in good posture. As dancers we know posture is one of the most basics aspects of dance! We always hear “Straight lines” and “don’t let your chin or butt stick out”. The same applies for when we are not dancing.

When you are sitting for long periods of time, it is normal for your muscles to get tired and your body starts to slouch. But when you relax your posture you put unnecessary extra pressure on your joints. Your head is approximately 10-12 pounds. However, when you start to slouch and your neck is looking down- the pressure on your neck and shoulders increases significantly!

So, imagine, sitting in classes all day with poor posture – your body is going to take a beating! Here are some tips to help keep your good posture and keep you performing at your peak!

1)     Check your desk set up

You want the computer screen is at eye level. One trick is to place books under the laptop or desktop screen to make sure you are looking straight out.

Your feet should be planted firmly on the floor with your back supported by the chair.

Finally- make sure your desk is not too high or too low!

2)     Posture Checks
Every time you check your phone or the clock- check your posture. Make sure you are not slouching.

3)     Movement Breaks
Between classes make sure you get up and move! Even if it is only to do a quick stretch or walk a lap around the class room. Moving your body will help prevent stiffness. Plus, as an added bonus it will jump start your brain to make it easier to stay awake and focused 😊
